Nakuru, Kenya – August 2025 – Wekkitech Limited, through its flagship skills empowerment initiative Fiber Mtaani, has officially launched Cohort 2 of its hands-on fiber optic training program at Kabarak University. The five-day workshop, running from August 25th to 29th, 2025, is set to train over 120 participants in cutting-edge Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) deployment, network design, and safety best practices.
Building on the success of Cohort 1, which equipped 102 trainees with practical fiber skills and recorded a 65% employment or self-employment rate within three months, this edition features stronger industry partnerships and a broader training scope.
Strategic Partnerships Driving Impact
- Nia Fiber returns as the main partner, providing critical support in both technical resources and industry mentorship.
- Kabarak University, serving as the host institution, is not only providing facilities but also integrating 20 of its Telecommunications Engineering students into the workshop alongside 100 external participants.
- Skylink Networks Ltd, under the leadership of Mr. Kenneth Koech, has joined as the infrastructure partner, supplying key fiber deployment equipment and materials to enrich hands-on learning.
- Talks are ongoing with the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), the ICT Authority (ICTA), Nakuru County Government, and the Communications Authority of Kenya to further bolster certification, technical support, and policy alignment for the program.
Training with Real-World Application
Cohort 2 maintains Fiber Mtaani’s unique hands-on-first approach. Trainees work directly with industry-grade tools, equipment, and live network simulations — bridging the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world fieldwork.
Participants will gain competencies in:
- Fiber optics and internet installation
- Network design and planning
- Work-at-height and electrical safety
- Customer service and professional ethics in fiber deployment
Expanding Opportunities for Youth and the Industry
“Fiber Mtaani Cohort 2 is more than just training — it’s an employment and entrepreneurship pipeline for Kenya’s next generation of fiber technicians,” said Brill Okoth Owino, Founder & CEO of Wekkitech and Lead Convenor of Fiber Mtaani. “Through partnerships like Nia Fiber, Kabarak University, and Skylink Networks, we are not only teaching skills but also creating industry linkages that lead directly to jobs and business opportunities.”
With Kenya’s internet penetration and infrastructure needs growing rapidly, the demand for skilled fiber technicians is higher than ever. Fiber Mtaani aims to meet this demand by producing work-ready graduates capable of contributing immediately to ISP operations, network expansions, and community connectivity projects.
Looking Ahead
Wekkitech plans to continue scaling Fiber Mtaani in partnership with industry leaders, academic institutions, and government bodies, ensuring that youth across Kenya — and eventually Africa — gain access to sustainable careers in the digital economy.
